Pushed down by slipped words? The Hospital suffers in Shanghai

Jerry Yan's lead drama "The Hospital" suffered a slump in the viewer's ratings when it was aired in mainland China. Yesterday, a mainland Chinese resource person revealed that it was because of the earlier incident during the F4 tourism promo in Japan and Korea where they called Taiwan a "country" in their press conference. The mainland side had no choice but to keep it low-keyed and cancel the earlier broadcast schedule and all production promotions, but still it was just natural to bring negative impact at the ratings results.

Shanghai's Dragon TV Channel won the expensive exclusive rights for the showing of "The Hospital," however, the highest average ratings it got on its early nights is only 2%, and according to Shanghai media standards, it is a "tragic and quiet ending" With regards to the mainland China side, its "zero production promotions" and that "country slipped words" incident and related rumors just like the "secrets that must not be told" should not hope for a positive response. According to sources, Dragon TV is also suffering, since they spent a huge amount of money, and actually bears their unexpected misfortune.

When The Hospital director Cai Yue Xun heard about this yesterday, he was helpless and unusually astounded, softly wondered why but couldn't find the answer.

In addition, the mainland side also analyzed that The Hospital was aired early. Copies of the series were also earlier downloaded on-line and its DVD is already available at Taiwan. "Most of the viewers had already watched it.' The golden broadcast time in mainland is every 11 pm, also the main reason why the ratings have been affected.

TH's average rating on Shanghai Dragon TV was 5% with the highest at 7% and the big ending was only 2%. This 2% coincide with China's long national holiday in October where the professionals & white collar workers who watched TH goes for vacations in contrast to Dragon's tv other dramas which average 10%. Also, when TH was aired in Taiwan, there were already pirated copies of it available in China & downloading by internet, thereby affecting its ratings in China.

When The Hospital was first screened in Taiwan, it reached 3 digits ratings, considering the medium level of Taiwan dramas
(fatty2: 3 is consider very good already as TH was not shown during weekend nites which is for idol dramas. TH was shown during Taiwan tv golden timeslot of weekday 8pm, head on with the extremely popular Tw soap operas. it wld be unfair to take TH & compared it with idol dramas rating as idol dramas are shown during Sunday nite in a less competitive timeslot).

TH is described as a well-crafted tale of power struggle and relationships in a hospital, very different from MG, which is an idol drama of rich guy meets poor girl. Jerry's acting skills in TH was very much focused on and excepting for the fact of the length of his hair is not really suitable, Jerry's acting is praised, especially during episodes involving emotional scenes & his confrontation scene with Leon Dai, his acting was considered to be brilliant.

Jerry's fame & popularity & his position as No. 1 is such that BOF producer is willing to change the script for Jerry if only Jerry wld agree to acting in BOF with Wu Zun.

Jerry has met up in Hong Kong with HK's 3 giants of movies, Wang Jia Wei, Stanley Kuan & William Chang for a 6 hours discusion. Matt Cheng , Jerry's manager, has refused to reveal anything excepting that Jerry will be focusing on movies next year.

TH copyrights was brought by Japan's NHK & TH's dvd were no. 1 in sales on HMV.

Would Japanese and Korean dramas on the way to reduce the space for Taiwanese dramas? Maybe not. Recent good news arrived that last year's just concluded drama production "The Hospital" will premiere at the NHK TV channel on October 4. This, however, is first time for a Taiwanese drama to be shown in NHK, which is another honor brought to Taiwan, and prompts Director Cai to actually bring Jerry Yan and the rest of the cast to promote the drama in Japan.

Depicting the power struggle in a hospital, it didn't only gained the Taiwanese viewers' approval, but it also started to set a record in the Japanese NHK TV history since it is it's the first Taiwanese drama production to be aired in the network, and this historical feat will already premier on October 4.
Happiness is all written in Cai Yue Xun's face, because of the high earnings he got from the many foreign TV copyrights for the drama, and because he is the director for both Meteor Garden and The Hospital. Director Cai Yue Xun: "We already spent a very long time with Japanese commercial dramas, finally, we had invaded the NHK TV. In Japan and in Taiwan, everybody is actually very happy. "

Meteor Garden fever has swept Southeast Asia, the US and other countries, that even the close-market Korea had also grabbed for it's rights, bringing profits close to $100 million already. After The Hospital was shown last year, its filming rights had extended to many countries, earning back it's $80 million production costs many times over. allowing these two dramas heat up abroad. Cai Yue Xun without the fuss said that Jerry Yan's Superman charms cannot be out-powered.

Cai Yue Xun: As Jerry would now come to talk in Japan, I can't think of anything but success. The drama team had all their their best, to have that international quality, and I'm also very grateful."

Even it was supposed to be aired this month, the Japanese side, however, had requested for a promo and planned for a full-packed schedule of events, that will include Jerry and the rest of the cast and crew, starting on their arrival on Sept. 7. This will in turn bring about positive drama and economic effects to Taiwan we can all look forward to.

The Taiwanese version of the "The Hospital" will premier in China this autumn over at the Dragon TV (Dong Fang Wei Shi) Channel under the SMG. Until then, whether or not Jerry Yan's acting skills, will get the Mainland viewers' approval and will become their focus.

The Taiwanese version of "The Hospital is about to be shown over at Dragon TV this fall, as it had obtained the exclusive rights of its broadcast in China. At present, it has already been announced by the management, that the soonest date would be on September. Due to the success of the Japanese version of "The Hospital", the Taiwanese version hopes to spark another TV wave, this time from the sole-carrier of the "Meteor Garden" cast, particularly idol Jerry Yan's performance, which would become the main focal attention.

In the Japanese version, there is the main lead and another is the antagonist as the two different male leads. The Taiwanese version has three male leads -- Jerry as Su Yi Hua, representing the young generation of doctors who are honest, warm and simple, with the belief that doctors should care for their patients beyond medical attention --- Leon Dai as Qui Qing Cheng representing the middle-aged bracket of doctors, with experienced medical skills, and quite ambitious to get a position in the society -- and Wu Meng Da as Tang Guo Tai, the Surgical Department head, with more resources, and representing the"powerful group". The whole drama revolves around the medical malpractice issues in a hospital, and unfolds the internal power struggle within. Thus, inside "The Hospital", a serene place where the test of strength on human nature's dishonesty and mistrust is laid in front of the viewers.

Here, Meteor Garden director Cai Yue Xun and idol Jerry Yan unites again. From the beginning of the shooting of this Taiwanese version of "The Hospital." the director had already gathered the appropriate power cast and took 8 months to film, making this slow work but fine craftsmanship project more attracting to watch by the viewers. However, that drama unexpectedly received low ratings when it was first shown last summer in Taiwan, and Jerry's lack of skills was even more pointed out. Fortunately, after a few episodes, it gained the viewer's momentum and critics certainly gave positive comments, especially for Wu Meng Da and Leon Dai's remarkable acting. Worthy of reception, that drama also received two nominations in this year's Shanghai TV Festival "Magnolia" Awards for Juror's Choice for Best Asian TV Series Special Citation Award and for Best Actor in an Asian TV Series Award.

With regards to the present exclusive rights, person in charge over at Dragon TV and the Shanghai Media Group Center revealed that even though Jerry Yan's acting skill is being intrigued, he, however, is still super famous, and this drama became a appetizing cake for several TV channels to fight for in getting its exclusive rights. Finally, Dragon TV got hold of its super expensive copyright. According to reports, that drama had already been approved for showing by the management, and if it goes smooth, the soonest would be on September so that viewers will finally have the chance to see it. With regards to the sensitive scenes inside the drama, The Hospital person in charge said the Dragon TV version will edit "President" words again.

As whether or not Jerry's acting skills will get the approval of the Mainland viewers approval, "veteran" Wu Meng Da was interviewed the other day regarding this topic and said, " Acting in dramas certainly doesn't need to be in a standard. Of course some people would like it, and some people would not. I think Jerry already displayed a very good performance. His acting has also considerably improved. Even though the Japanese version came first, It think our version is more Chinese viewer-friendly."
