Taiwan holds 2nd fans meeting for F4 boy band to boost tourism

Sunday October 28, 2007 Taiwan

http://news.monstersandcritics.com/busines...o_boost_tourism

Taipei - Taiwan on Sunday held the second fans meeting for its F4 boy band, hoping to attract tourists and boost Taiwan's slow-growing tourism.

Some 5,000 Asian fans, mostly young and middle-aged women from Japan and South Korea, flew to Taipei to meet the F4 members, visit the locations of F4's TV drama the Meteor Garden and to buy F4 T-shirts, posters and CDs.

The fans' meeting, the second after one held last April, was staged by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau at the National Taiwan University Gymnasium.

The fans snapped up F4 goods before marching into the gymnasium to meet the F4 stars - Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Wanness Wu, Ken Chu - all handsome boys in their 20s.

The F4 members, Taiwan's tourism ambassadors, introduced Taiwan's scenic spots and food, posed photos and played ganes with selected fans before ending the hour-long meetins by singing together a song and shaking hands with the fans sitting near the stage.

F4's fans arrived in Taiwan early this week and have already attended separate fans meetings with their favorite F4 member.

The F4 became famous thoughout Asia after its TV drama Meteor Garden was shown in Taiwan and Southeast Asia in 2001. Their Asian fans, from teenage girls to grannies, like the four boys mainly because of their good looks.

Motomi Unmeki, 30, an office worker from Osaka, Japan, said she has been a fan a fan of Jerry Yan for five years and has attended Jerry's fans meeting in Hong Kong and South Korea.

When asked why she likes Jerry, she covered her mouth and whispered through giggles: 'His face. He is handsome and cool.'

An 18-member fans group from the Philippines gave the same answer. The groups members, also fans of Jerry, range in age from 10 to 52, and the youngest is Christian Louis Abrigo, a fourth-grade boy from Manila who came with his mother.

'I like Jerry because he sings well and he is good-looking,' he said.

Taiwan, encouraged by Japan and South Korea's success in drawing foreign tourists by promoting local film or television stars, appointed the F4 members as tourism ambassadors, using them to make TV ads, sending them abroad to promote Taiwan's tourism and holding the first overseas fans meeting in Taipei in April.

Taiwan press said the two fans meetings have brought Taiwan millions of US dollars. The week-long F4 package tours have not only brought in foreign currency but also promoted Taiwan's tourist spots.

Despite its rich culture and beautiful scenery, Taiwan has met obstacles in boosting its tourism due to its five-decade ban on air and sea links with China, which is set to become the world's top source of outbound tourists.

As the arrival of Chinese tourists is still out of sight due to continued cross-Strait tension, Taiwan recently revised down its 2008 inbound tourists target from five million to four million.

In 2006 Taiwan received 3.5 million foreign tourists, up 4.2 per cent from 2005 with Japanese and South Koreans comprising the largest share.

Vic (Zaizai) Chou was deeply honored last night during his Album Signing and Concert at the Xi Men Ting parking lot when Jerry, Vanness and Ken unexpectedly showed up that made him really surprised. Japanese and Korean fans already didn't care whether their LV signature bags dropped to the floor as they were already out of control, screaming and rushing in for F4's unexpected reunion.

In Zaizai's autograph signing session, Jerry (left), Ken,
and Vanness came in and helped each other in carrying Zaizai

F3 unexpectedly showed up

Last night, this reporter was pleasantly surprised, when Jerry actually came up with an idea and said, "Because Vic is the first F4 to come up with an album, and also the first to release 3 albums, so I suggested to Ken and Vanness to go to his Album signing and concert. Everyone agreed so we all came together."

Because Zaizai wasn't aware when F3 suddenly appeared before him, he got a bid scared and shouted," Why did you come here? I simply want to cry.!You are really my good brothers." However, F3 only stayed for 10 minutes and quickly left, but the fans loud screams continued for a very long time.

A performance by local pop group F4 for nearly 5,000 fans from Japan and South Korea will take place at the main stadium of National Taiwan University today, the Tourism Bureau said yesterday. Tourism officials estimated that the fans will bring in at least NT$100 million (US$3.03 million) in tourism revenue.

The officials said the fans have come mostly on package tours, paying an average of NT$20,000 apiece. In addition to watching the performance, they will also be taken to various scenic spots around the country.

The bureau has also prepared limited edition notebooks and passport holders featuring the F4 members, as well as manuals on backpacking in Taiwan.

Today's F4 performance will be the second sponsored by the Tourism Bureau, following on the success of the first one in April, which brought 4,000 Japanese and 1,000 South Korean fans to see their idols. Today's performance will be by attended 4,100 Japanese fans and around 500 South Korean fans, they said.

F4, originally four little-known actors, shot to fame after their appearance in a TV drama titled The Meteor Garden that began broadcasting in April 2001. The four members were cast in the drama as handsome and arrogant students from one of the richest and most influential families in Taiwan.

The band members have been invited by the Tourism Bureau to serve as Taiwan's tourism ambassadors in Japan and South Korea.

If a government official from the Tourism Bureau had seen these scenes, they would surely rejoice that they had tapped F4 to promote tourism. Tomorrow, F4 will have endorsement event, but on Saturday afternoon, only Zaizai and Jerry Yan would have their private gathering with their fans. attracting some 3000 foreign fans to come. However, the two famous idols almost has the same time for their private gatherings, that caught fans rushing to the venue in dilemma.

Taiwan's expert lady killer Jerry Yan and Vic Zaizai Chou each had their individual activities in different venues in the afternoon, letting their fans to wish that they could all float in the oceans to come to Taiwan. Zaizai moved towards his fans one step at a time, the more he came closer to the fans, the more screams were heard.

Zaizai's spoof solo album specially emphasized "He is not F4." Girlfriend Da S didn't show up, yet the flower basket she sent had the very funny note "I'm not Da S."

As long as F4 does anything worthwhile, Japanese career ladies in real large troops will rush to the venue for them. In Jerry's Fan Session, there was also a 74-year old senior career lady who came from Hong Kong, Muslim fans, China-based fans, who were extremely enthusiastic. Handsome charm Jerry Yan dressed up as Taiwan's "Uncle Xiang Jiao", a sacrificial lamb reaching through, as he felt so embarrassed with his antic. However, this group of idols had always introduced Taiwanese snacks, that attracted fans to come to Taiwan. And the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan has no problem with that anymore!

returned to Taiwan
yesterday night.

Jerry Yan returned from Shanghai yesterday night, and was met by large groups of fans at the airport. Among those who welcomed him were Japanese and Korean tourists, dragging his luggages as he passed their line, while fans continued to chase his path. Today he will start rehearsing for the F4 related event, and tomorrow he will join Vic Chou, Ken Chu and Vanness Wu to perform at its joint international fan meeting.

Jerry would wipe away his sweat to join a special segment to play basketball and also to cook snacks in the cum-kitchen later. Vic will also play basketball while kitchen master Ken will fill the fans' stomach while Vanness and his fans will have a Halloween costume party.

F4 had attracted thousands of Japanese and Korean fans for the Tourism Bureau, earning for Taiwan more than 1 Billion in revenues. After its sponsored idol drama "Right Here Waiting for You" will be shown in Japan and Korea on December, tourism influx is expected to continue growing.

Jerry and Zaizai is expected to be the most attended, and both happened to coincide with their selection of their fan gatherings today.

As F4 will have its 2nd international Fans Meeting,
the Quarantine Office broke its rules to let a
Japanese fan bring her hearing dog to Taiwan

Because of F4, the Department of Health's Quarantine Office made an exemption to allow a Japanese fan to bring her hearing dog with her, as she joins F4 "WISH TO SEE YOU IN TAIWAN" International Fans Meeting on October 28. As the master benefits on the dog, most likely the dog might also appear with F4 at the stage.

According to the Immigration provisions, foreign plants and animals which did not undergo quarantine inspection will not be allowed to enter the country. F4 International Fans Gathering Engineering Unit Super Dome Company expressed that this time a Japanese fan named Ms. Kouyu is deaf, so she must have her hearing dog with her and applied for a travel permit through her travel agency. She was then allowed to bring her Belgium shepherd dog to come to Taiwan and join the activities, and watch with the other fans.

The sponsors will then ask her to lead her hearing dog at the stage. Although this deaf fan would not be able to speak with F4 at the stage, her dear hearing dog will be her medium of communication to F4, allowing some lovable hugs and curiosity with her and her dog.

As there had been a stationary performances during their April 22 Fans Gathering, F4 will now offer their Japanese and Korean fans with Taiwan's delicacy fruits. Fans fight over colors and position, asserts strength, Jerry Yan hits to start ahead of Zaizai

PLS. DO NOT REPOST IF YOU FEEL THIS WILL CAUSE
TENSION AMONG FANS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.

Zaizai and Jerry Yan are still not joining for their
two Tourism promos, and hits to start ahead

Is the pair of "good brothers" Vic Chou and Jerry Yan who actually talk with each other at nights, just an artificial facade? On the eve of the second wave of Tourism Bureau's F4 Fan Meeting event this October 28, the two did not only "hit the stage" and advanced their individual Fan meetings at the 27th, but both of their fans also repeatedly moved their own forces to showcase their support, comparing each of their deep significant strengths.

When F4 became tourism ambassadors, they had always pictured a happy harmony. But F4 then breaks up with the news that as Zaizai is about to launch his new solo album, his repeatedly postponed and "escaping from his military service" had again created a stir. Even if Vic and Jerry once had openly spoke about how they often talk with each other at late nights, yet as soon as they bumped into each other at work, still each of the "dear brother clearly goes into account" and neither of whom get close.

Because it has been 3 years since Zaizai's last solo album has been out, fans had missed him. His official network had announced his album launching concert on the 27th and his Fans Meeting on the 28th. Fans were also asked to wear a blue Tshirt, that of a lighter shade to show support to Zaizai.

What is worth to note is, Jerry Yan's official website "Star Jerry" color is also light blue. His fans immediately complained that "Blue is Star Jerry's T shirt color. This is not their "color", isn't it?" Jerry Yan then immediately mobilized their ranks to change their T shirt color into white , to clearly distinguish them from the rest.

Because on the 28th the main event will primarily comprise of Japanese and Korean fans, all other F4 fans will fight off for the alloted number of fans to enter the venue. The other day, Zaizai's official website had raffled out 96 fans, Ken's official website had chosen down his 70 fans while Jerry Yan's official website had only selected 24 of his fans, causing many complaints from Jerry fans, questioning the difference in alloted quota among the "same F4 fans." Yesterday afternoon, Jerry's official website also urgently revised it and increased the number of people raffled out.

JK NOTE: LIBERTY TIMES HAS ERRONEOUSLY PLACED JERRY'S FAN MEETING DATE ON OCTOBER 28. THIS SHOULD BE OCTOBER 27.

F4 Jerrry Yan, Vic "Zai Zai" Chou, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu
will meet their fans for the last time as tourism ambassadors
for "Wish to See You in Taiwan" Fans Meeting on October 28

F4 successfully sucks in money again as they hold their 2nd "Wish To See You in Taiwan" Fans Meeting on October 28 at the University of Taiwan Gym. As of yesterday, over 6000 Japanese and Korean fans had already booked, exceeding the 5000 mark during their 1st Fans Meeting last April, thereby adding again more than $170 million foreign revenues into Taiwan tourism. According to statistics, total foreign revenues including promo sales through F4, had already reached $1 billion for the Taiwanese tourism industry.

F4 Jerry Yan, Vic Chou, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu reunited as a group to be the Official Taiwanese Ambassadors for Tourism and in their 2nd Fans meeting on October 28, they would wrap up their tourism duties and go solo again.Because this is F4's final fans meeting, Japanese and Korean tourist groups will come in even greater star chase force to Taiwan, along with fans from Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and many more countries.

According to reports, more than 6000 fans already booked. Compared from last April, the 3days-2nights hotel package now only have 2 types - the "economy" which costs Y70,000 (about NT$20,000) and the "luxury" which costs Y120,000 (about NT$33,000). With the airfare, food expenses plus the purchase of related goods, each of the over 6000 fans would spend an average of around NT$35,000, which will bring about 170 million revenues to Taiwan tourism.

In order to entertain the fans, the Tourism Bureau would prepare a "singing with the fans" portion with F4. As they made snacks and tea last April, this time they can perhaps dance and then ask the fans to dance with them to get it high! Tourism Bureau International Groups Director Liu Xi Lin said, they hope they can let fans get even closer to F4 during this Fan meeting.

After F4 wraps up their contract with the Tourism Bureau, show the idol drama with Vic Chou entitles "Right Here Waiting For You" and this final Fans Meeting, Vic will have New Album launching at the Nangang 101 on the 27th, and hold his Solo Fans Meeting on the 28th.

Just after the "Wish to See You in Taiwan" event on the 28th, Jerry Yan will hold his own Fan Meeting at the Nan Gang Sports Center, while Vanness Wu will also also hold his own Fans Meeting at the same time, and Ken being an expert in good food, will plan up something for his private fans' meeting.

Zaizai, Ken - rushed filming as if horror film

Monday October 8, 2007 Taiwan

Despite the typhoon, filming for Taiwan tourism drama was carried on as usual. Early in the morning Zai received a phone call from the crew that filming will still be on, he was stunned as said "typhoon ye..." However, he & Ken punctually arrived at Taoyuan to film a hospital scene. In the end, the main door at 1st level was broken due to the typhoon. Fortunately, they were at level 19. But they felt the whole building shaking.

As November is the deadline to submit to Taiwan tourism bureau, they have to rush to complete. Zai has to start promoting his new album soon, and Director Cai's new show is waiting for him. Ken has to go to China to film swordfighting drama end November. Therefore, the schedule is extremely tight.

So, despite the strong typhoon yesterday, they had to continue filming. Although Zai has good driving skills, his assisitant took control of the steering wheel yesterday. He could feel the car shaking. Ken drove, but as he left home early the typhoon was not that strong yet. When they arrived at the filming location, they realised the main door of the hospital is broken, and the whole building was moving vigourously, it was as if they were filming a horror film.

Forever 4 for How Much Longer?

Wednesday October 3, 2007 Singapore

F4 reunited recently in Korea. But why was Vanness Wu the only one performing?

A FAN banner for Taiwanese quartet F4 read 'Yong Yuan Bu Mie'. It's Mandarin for 'never dies'.

But strangely, only one of them - Vanness Wu - performed at the Seoul World Cup stadium where the fourth Asia Song Festival was held on 22 Sep. The other three - Jerry Yen, Vic Chou and Ken Chu - only joined Vanness on stage briefly, to help introduce other Chinese performers like A-mei and Gigi Leung. How come?

When asked at a press conference the previous day, Ken, 28, replied irritably: 'Didn't I already mention this just now? It's due to scheduling conflicts.' He did not offer details.

Could the no-show be linked to mumblings we heard about F4's 'arrogant' attitude during the festival? We don't know, but to their credit, the group - which shot to phenomenal fame in 2001 with the Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden - has somehow managed to revive its popularity time and again.

Despite critics giving them two years, they have lasted six and are still counting. Their latest achievement?

Becoming the face of Taiwan tourism in Korea, after scoring an endorsement deal with the Taiwan Tourism Bureau early this year. And of course, being invited to the prestigious Asia Song Festival says something about their popularity.

But for how long more can these guys hold it together when there are so many younger and cuter acts vying for teenage attention.

While their fans were excited to see them together again, the mood at the group's 'Wish To See You In Taiwan' press conference at Shilla Hotel on 21 Sep was anything but. They should be seasoned artistes by now, but the four guys, who recently renamed themselves JVKV using their initials, still came across as shy when fielding questions from the host.

BLAND ANSWERS

Their answers were so bland, it was more fulfilling to sip the sweet and flavourful bubble milk tea provided by the organisers. Only the goofy Vic, 26, gave a quotable quote when introducing Taiwan's famous pineapple tarts.

'It's like Taiwan, full of inner beauty. It's a little sticky, but full of passion,' he said with a laugh.

The rest just gave updates on themselves - Jerry's new project is still in talks, Vanness just finished filming a China-produced drama, while Ken and Vic are busy playing cab drivers in a drama commissioned by Taiwan's Tourism Bureau. But they made sure to highlight that they would hold a fan gathering in Taiwan on 28 Oct and urged their Korean fans to sign up and get freebies like F4 T-shirts and figurines.

One would expect more enthusiasm, perhaps a hint of drama. But the 40-minute session offered little insight about the four guys or their hometown, except to introduce some popular local food like xiao long bao (pork dumplings).

At the farewell party, Vanness, 29, was the only energetic one, while Jerry, 30, and Vic looked incredibly bored hiding at one corner while their managers fended off interview requests. Ken chose to mingle with A-mei and her entourage instead.

Reunited they may be, but can they stay united for their fans? Perhaps not.
